Kingyo: Modern Izakaya & Thick Cut Sashimi | Vancouver, BC Canada

When in Vancouver, you must take the advantage and eat fresh seafood and authentic Hong Kong foods (to be covered in separate posts). I've done so much research about Kingyo, which is a popular, local Japanese izakaya spot in the city and decided that it's a worthy place to stop by during my 4-day Vancouver trip. What drawn me to Kingyo is pictures of their rice bowls, which features ridiculously thick cuts of sashimi and/or beef. Thick and huge cuts of sashimi is practically unseen in New York City!

It was so hard to pick which donburi rice bowls because all of them are amazing combination (crab, beef, salmon, etc.). I decided on the blue-fin tuna variety because it features various cuts of tuna sashimi. I also wanted to try their uni even though it's not in this particular bowl, the server kindly checked in with the kitchen and confirmed that is okay with an additional cost. Add-ons and changes to the menu are usually no-no at a Japanese restaurant, so I'm grateful for the accommodation!

Overall Rating: 😋😋😋😋

My simple verdict: MUST GET. When the fish is high quality and fresh, that's all it matters. Everything in my bowl was 10000% delicious and made me head over heels. I also tried their sushi which is an Aburi-style mainly popular in Vancouver (flame/torch searing seafood on top). The aburi salmon sushi are also really good, mainly because the salmon was fresh. I still recommend the donburi rice bowls if you want that heavenly experience like I did.
